Thanks for your comment. I agree. Associations need to re-think their purpose, member's interests/needs and work to re-align their business models to reflect that new reality. There are a series of engagements essential to success including renewing association cultures, examining business models, leveraging technology, crafting strategy and igniting generational passion.

People always take a reading on the person in charge. So when it comes to building commitment, you must lead by example, just as commanders must show courage if they want soldiers to show bravery on the battlefield.

If you provide lukewarm leadership, you’ll see the passion cool among your people. Commitment can’t survive when the leader doesn’t seem to care. So be obvious. Turn up the burner inside yourself. Let the heat of your commitment be strong enough to glow in the dark.

These are all useful tactics, but they strike me less as a recipe for growth as for keeping the business alive during tough times. Associations seeking actual growth need to develop a much clearer point of view on the purpose-driven new value their stakeholders need to succeed in turbulent times and the interdependent capabilities required to deliver that value, as well as how the association will capture profitable revenue streams for itself.

We will need incisive business model thinking within association leadership systems if we are going to build a future of growth for organizations throughout our community.

I love my books, but could it be because I am one of the baby boomers? I think not. There is something to say about having mixed media... we need to break away from two dimensional worlds. Without interacting in the "real world" I am afraid we will lose touch with reality. I am making a conscious effort to read to my grand children, to let my grand children watch me read a book, rather than using yet another e-device. Yes, I have begrudgingly moved to the smart phone and yes, I do love the technology, but I believe we cannot afford to, as a society, go completely paperless.. as you point out so eloquently, it really is NOT good for us or our planet.

As we have heard for many decades.. prepare for the worst, expect the best. I try to lead my team with this philosophy as well. We need to be positive to continue to motivate not only those we work with, but even ourselves (point 6 from above). However, we all know that sometimes failure is inevitable. Contingency plans have never been more crucial in these times of low tolerance (economy does that to us all).

Thanks for the great reminder, Kerry.

I like the comments of Simon Sinek in his book, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. He says, "Our need to belong is not rational, but it is a constant that exists across all people in all cultures. It is a feeling we get when those around us share our values and beliefs. When we feel like we belong we feel connected and we feel safe. As humans we crave the feeling and we seek it out.”
